SMAD 332 Long-form Magazine Layout
Spring 2022
The objective of this project was to design spreads using a layout grid, apply paragraph and character styles in InDesign, and incorporate captions, sidebars, and other text features. I applied my knowledge of typography, visual hierarchy, and effective composition throughout the process. As an ocean enthusiast, I also explored how the moon’s light influences marine life.
Inspiration
I started the project by completing research, collecting inspiration, and browsing typefaces.
Sketches
I then sketched my ideas using pencil and paper.
Design and Media Rationale
I aimed for my design to reflect life in the ocean. I used a color palette of purple, blue, and yellow to represent the sky, ocean, and moon. Waves and motion were incorporated into the layout, and a nautical-inspired font was used to evoke the feeling of the sea.
I selected photos of animals and organisms referenced in the article and incorporated my own illustrations. My goal was to establish a clear visual hierarchy using oceanic elements to support the article’s main ideas. The original article was written by Ferris Jabr and published by ProPublica.
